Welcome to Die Mas

Die mas van kakamas

Die Mas Boerdery and Resort started of as a single plot of land bought by Vlok and Welna Hanekom in 1970, both  school teachers at the time. “Die Mas” litterally means “the mast of a ship” The farm on the banks of the Orange river had a slow start with only 1 hectare of vineyards, few hectares used for cotton, lentils and maize production, two donkeys and a wooden wagon.

Today 40 year later, the same family owns and runs the now expanded farm of  more than 1500 hectares of wich aprox 100 ha is under vineyards. These are utilised for table grapes, wine grapes, raisin making, our own private wine cellar and a brandy distillary. The only farm in South Africa doing al of the above with the fruit of the vine. There is also a wide variety of livestock and other domestic farm animals, and maize and lucerne are cultivated as a result.

In the early 80’ we started of a 2 hectare campsite along the banks of the orange river and chalets soon followed. The self-catering chalets with fully equiped kithens and braai facillities, are en-suite, free standing and fully air conditioned, sleep 3-4 people,  making it ideal for families.

A Very big thatched roof open-air lapa restaurant and bush-pub now caters easily for 400 people, ideal for big weddings and other functions. Come enjoy a very peacefull sundowner on our wooden deck overlooking the orange river eco system. Or you can enjoy a very lively late night danceparty with the locals during the summer holidays.

You will never be bored on this working farm especially if you partake in the farm activities during preparation time or harvest season or even feeding time for the animals. If you want to do your own thing there are hiking trails, bird-watching, fishing, quad-biking, donkey cart trips, canoeing or swimming in the river and many more. Our ultimate farm experience definitely is the fully guided 3 hour farm tour on a tractor pulled wagon. Whilst visiting al the important farm activities, and beautiful river scenary, you will be tasting al the different wines from the different vineyard blocks as we pass them by. a Visit to the packhouse in season with 300 fruit packers is a highligh especcially for our overseas visitors.
